SCHENECTADY—MAY 18, 2015—The Music Haven Concert Series kicks off its second quarter century of free open-air concerts with an impressive line-up of world-class performances in Schenectady’s Central Park.

“This summer, ‘traveling the world one concert at a time’ will include visits to Peru, Mali, England, Ireland and the Punjab region of India, as well as New York City, by way of Bali and good old Albany,” says Producing Artistic Director Mona Golub. “The unifying element for all of the concerts is simply the top shelf caliber of the talent.”

Novalima opens the season with a pioneering explosion of Afro-Peruvian music influenced by the modern sounds of electronica. Red Baraat, an international brass and dhol drum-driven collective will keep the rhythm pulsating with its Indian Bhangra-inflected thrum. Steeleye Span lets loose their iconic British folk-rock, led by the transcendent voice of Maddy Prior. Malian ngoni (lute) master Bassekou Kouyate, and his band Ngoni Ba, are sure to ignite a West-African dance party. The Joey Alexander Trio, led by the 11-year-old Indonesian jazz piano prodigy touring behind his debut release, will astonish and delight. And Albany’s own Felicia Collins—fresh from a 22-year stint with David Letterman’s CBS Orchestra—brings home the blues and more for the grand finale, completing the 2015 lineup of free Sunday concerts. (There is no performance on July 5.)

“Music Haven’s unique ‘outdoor concert hall’ sensibility creates cultural experiences that make Central Park a destination for adventurous audiences,” says Golub, who was honored in 2014 with a Patroon Award, the city’s highest honor, for her dedication to bringing accessible, diverse entertainment to Schenectady.

“We’ve got high quality concessions and raffle prizes that accent the musical genres being presented. We’ve got ample space for listening and dancing. And we’ve got information-packed playbills highlighting each artist and their new releases, which are often signed during personal exchanges after the show.”

Talented local and international artists will (also) be special guests at each concert, ranging from Maria Zemantauski’s adventurous new GX3+ combo to the Hot Tamale Brass Band, the official revelers of the Red Sox. The Irish/Scottish/English stylings of Boston’s Ulster Landing will delight trad fans. And talking drummer Baye Kouyate and his special guests Famoro Diabate (balafon) and Yacouba Diabate (kora) will make July 26 a night of African music for the history books. Additionally, the award-winning Schenectady County Community College Jazz Combo and Bobbie Van Detta and Friends prove the mettle of musicians in our own backyard.

Home Style Caterers returns with a variety of complete meals, snacks and beverages, beginning at 6 p.m. each Sunday. And Ben & Jerry’s will scoop premium ice cream at each show.

In the case of inclement weather, Proctors remains the official rain site for the Music Haven Concert Series—which was the recipient of a Good News Award from The Chamber of Schenectady County in April of this year.
