SCHENECTADY—MAY 25, 2017—The 28th annual Music Haven Concert Series is a globetrotting extravaganza, packed, as always, with diverse performers, cutting edge players and renowned trailblazers. Music Haven patrons have come to expect the best, trusting Producing Artistic Director Mona Golub to be their guide.

“I’ve curated this summer’s itinerary with a focus on crossing borders and breaking down barriers, in celebration of our shared humanity,” says Golub. “To that end, we’ll be hosting artists from Ireland, West Africa, Cuba, Louisiana, and visiting Veracruz, Iraq, Prince Edward and the Magdalen Islands and Yemen for first time.“

Legendary accordionist and fiddler Sharon Shannon opens the season on a lush Celtic note with global perspective, followed by the fearless Amadou & Mariam—a dynamic live act that has fused the deep grooves of West Africa with European pop overtones for 30 years. Septeto Santiaguero transports Schenectady to a sweltering Cuban nightclub for nonstop dancing while the world’s premier Cajun band, Beausoleil avec Michael Doucet stoke the fire, Louisiana-style. Amir ElSaffar & Two Rivers Ensemble honor jazz, as Music Haven is wont, with a distinctly Middle Eastern twist. And Yemen Blues takes the series home with a bold blend of Arabian funk, jazz and soul.

“I’m particularly thrilled to welcome Afropop pioneers Amadou & Mariam and recently crowned Latin Grammy winners Septeto Santiaguero to Music Haven, and relish the opportunity to introduce Amir ElSaffar’s brilliant hybrid of Western jazz and Arabic maqam to our Summer Social audience on August 6.”

The latter event features a casual, ticketed dinner buffet under the Central Park pavilion, with a backstage artist meet and greet after the show.

“We’ll be musically traveling more than 26,000 miles this summer from start to finish,” says Golub, “all in the comfort of Central Park.”

Talented local and international artists are also featured as special guests at each concert, ranging from the mesmerizing Celtic tones of famed Solas guitarist John Doyle to the global fusion of vocalist/performance artist Jojo Abot. The Mexican countryside music of Radio Jarocho balances the joyous Acadian fiddle scrape of Vishten, and Cliff Brucker & Full Circle’s probing post-Bop improvisations provide the foil for the pop-leaning interpretations of Yemeni oud master Ahmed AlShaiba.

More Perreca’s joins Music Haven this season as stageside restauranteur, with a winning combination of classic Italian dinner selections and show-themed ethnic meals for purchase. Wolf Hollow Brewing Company will tap a variety of their locally-crafted brews on draught. And Ben & Jerry’s will scoop premium ice cream at each show.

In the case of inclement weather, Proctors remains the official rain site for The Music Haven Concert Series.
